If you are looking for a place to spend a holiday or a temporary stay in sunny destination, or a great investment opportunity, you may be interested in a location in the southernmost corner of Greece and Europe. Originally a fishing village in the southeast of Crete, today Makry Gialos is inhabited year-round by about 1,000 locals. In summer, however, it turns into a popular resort, fortunately still not very commercial.
On this southernmost coast of Europe, bathed by the warm Libyan Sea, you will discover your paradise at the end of the world: uncrowded beaches or traditional tavernas with fresh seafood delicacies that can be enjoyed at more than affordable prices, and with your feet in the sand.

Location
Makry Gialos, which means long bay in Greek, has an impressive white sandy beach that attracts not only foreign tourists but also locals from all over Crete. When it comes to beaches in the area, you’ll be spoilt for choice. The high standards achieved by the main beach at Makry Gialos have been Blue Flag certified and have calm, shallow waters for swimming, ideal for families. To the east and west, a short distance away, are more impressive bathing beaches, some of the best in Crete. In the north there is a varied topography of the landscape including cliffs, ravines and forest areas.
Makry Gialos is just a 30-minute drive along the coast to the east of Ierapetra, a port town of around 15,000 inhabitants, which is the economic and cultural centre of the region with its own hospital. Direct access to Makry Gialos is from the airports of Sitia (33 km, mostly local flights) and Heraklion (120 km, flights from all major European cities). The Greek government is pouring billions of euros into the island’s infrastructure, upgrading its road and energy networks, while the construction of a new international airport at Kasteli (100 km), which will be the second largest in Greece, is also nearing completion.
The villas are within walking distance of the local supermarkets, restaurants and bars in Makry Gialos, giving you the opportunity to experience the traditional Cretan lifestyle and local flavours.
The more active have easy access to water sports such as water skiing and windsurfing. Hiking and staying in nature is also offered by the Kapsa Gorge or Perivolakis – an area full of oaks and pines that includes several waterfalls, suitable for hiking at different times of the year.
Rent
Many foreign residents live here for several months of the year due to the ideal weather conditions. The area is famous for its 350 days of sunshine a year. The property can also be used as a rental investment. The property can be managed by a local management company who will be responsible for the maintenance and management of the common areas. The management company will provide apartment management and rental services (as an option for the buyer).
